Increase the offline storage quota for Kindle in epiphany

You can install Amazon's Kindle Cloud reader as a webapp on Fedora Linux using epiphany from gnome-software.

This just leaves you with one issue, the default offline storage quota for Database is a measly 6m, which you hit real quick.

Turns out, webkitgtk3 used to offer an api webkit_get_default_web_database_quota with webkitgtk3, which has been removed from webkitgtk4 used by epiphany.

To manually update this quota, locate the folder used by epiphany in application mode for Kindle.

$ ls ~/.local/share/
...
epiphany-kindlecloud-xxx
...

Open up the Database file here, and manually set the quota

$ cd ~/.local/share/epiphany-kindlecloud-xxx/databases
$ sqlite3 Database.db
sqlite3 > SELECT * FROM origins;
https_read.amazon.com_0| 6164480
sqlite3 > UPDATE origins SET quota=102400000 WHERE origin=https_read.amazon.com_0;

And now back to life.

Unity vs gnome-shell : the small things - status tray

Unity vs gnome-shell : the small things - status tray

gnome-shell status tray is an interesting implementation , written in js. Consequently, easy to learn, write for, and extend. What does bother me here, is the focus steal.

When a user click on a status tray icon and moves the cursor down diagonally, focus will switch to next nearest tray icon. This is rather annoying, and more so due to the space between the menu and the icon.

A bug has been filled for this ( gtk menu grab ? ), which Iam unable to locate.

With Unity, this is not seen as the icons are smaller and consequently user has very minimal chance of switching applet when a user moves the cursor diagonally down. Seems to me a good implementation of UI ( or is this fitt's law ?)

edit: gnome-shell has made the larger, thus fixing this issue for me.

Pushing for xchat-gnome 0.26.3

xchat-gnome 0.26.2 has been tagged, and not yet been pushed into ftp.gnome.org . I am instead trying to push xchat-0.26.3, ( hopefully) the last release for gtk2.x series, followed by xchat-gnome 0.3.0 for gnome3.

gnome legacy and gnome 3

For all the folks, who like to stick with "gnome legacy", instead of gnome 3 with bling and gnome-shell, setup the default gnome session accordingly

$ cd /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions
$ mv gnome.session gnome-new.session
$ mv gnome-fallback.session gnome.session

xchat-gnome and delays

sorry for the delay in releasing a new version. I have relocated to Pune, and currently looking for an accommodation and this would be followed by a broadband. Once this is setup, I will move ahead with working on xchat-gnome. Meanwhile, patches are welcome.

ps: xchat-gnome now has a mailing list

xchat-gnome 0.26.2

I am currently one of the maintainer of xchat-gnome, and working slowly towards releasing 0.26.2 ( https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=602311 ) .

Fedora 13, With Xorg 1.8.x , GNOME 2.30 and "fixed" nautilus

With release of GNOME 2.30, nautilus has refeverted to browser mode as default. So long spatial mode.

In Fedora Xorg is based of udev, rather than hal for automagic hardware detection.

Added Note : I have noticed Totem remembers the last played position

Fedora+Gnome keep getting better with time.

Duplicate emails and Evolution

Troubled with Duplicate emails in your inbox, in Evolution ?
You need the brand new remove-duplicate plugin, it slices, it dices, and it comes free with your own patch set, and make file.

Currently, upstream is working on this - Bug 587011 - evolution-kill-bonobo unable to build remove-duplicates

sqlite over libgda

I have learnt

* DDL ( data definition language ) varies from one implementation to another.

* it is easier and faster to maintain for one (database) backend , rather than across many.

* libgda is good when you are designing a application to manage databases.

* libgda is an overkill, when all you need to do is to maintain a small database.

* sqlite is fast, small, well documented, and has an active support over irc.

* to restrict db related code to as few files as possible.

* sqlite is an excellent resource to look up implementation of ".import" command.

* using git ( or any othe vcs ) saves a lot of time.

Evolution account editor accepts white space in host name as valid

Evolution will accept whitespace in hostname, and when one checks for email - failure ! and a rather tricky one to spot.

This has been fixed now, thanks for input from Alan Matsuoka.

xchat-gnome : sound notification

Upon quiting totem i heard a ping. This is from xchat-gnome ( from sound-notification plugin ). Seems that gnome_sound_play is being used to play the sound, which defaults to esd backend !!!

gnome_sound_play ("../../data/message.wav");

ESD has been superceeded by pulseaudio in most major distribution. I would prefer if we moved to a gstreamer based backend. I did end up re-writting the code to use gstreamer. The ping still did not work when i was playing music via totem.

Digging this further up, it turns out GStreamer support multiple profile for "audiosinks" and gstreamer-properties can only configure the default "audiosink". Grrrrr ! Ended up configuring all "audiosink" to "pulseaudio".

Abra ca daba ! magic with gstreamer. Ping now works as expected and on time.

reference bug : gnome bug #401829 – gstreamer-properties change all types of sinks (musicaudiosink) when changing audiosink

xchat-gnome : unchecking "Mark as away" does not work

Ticking away worked like a charm on xchat-gnome, but unticking does not do any magic.

This Turns out to be a bug fixed upstream ( gnome #462031 ). "grepping" the code reveals a rather trivial fix, and on further lookup a part of Fedora9 build. I ended up filing a bug-report ( fedora #430883 ).

A package was released with the stated fix, which crashes xchat-gnome when one tries to set/unset away.

$ xchat-gnome
(xchat-gnome:9519): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid uninstantiatable type
`(null)' in cast to `GtkToggleButton'
(xchat-gnome:9519): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_toggle_button_get_active: assertion `GTK_IS_TOGGLE_BUTTON (toggle_button)' failed

On lookup, turn out to be issue with variable naming. Baaad mojo.
gboolean away = gtk_toggle_button_get_active (GTK_TOGGLE_BUTTON(away));
Went head, cleaned up the patch and submitted the same. Now, i live in Peace.
